What is Garba? Garba is a traditional folk dance from the Indian state of Gujarat, typically performed during the nine-day Hindu festival of Navratri. The word "Garba" originates from the Sanskrit word "Garbha," meaning "womb," and it symbolizes the cycle of life.
The dance is usually performed in a circular formation around a central lamp or an image of Goddess Durga, representing the cyclical nature of life, time, and the universe. Dancers move in coordinated, rhythmic steps to the beat of traditional music, which often includes instruments like the dhol, tabla, and harmonium.
Garba is characterized by its energetic movements, colorful costumes, and vibrant atmosphere. Participants often wear traditional attire, with women in brightly colored chaniya cholis (long skirts with blouses) and men in kediyu and dhoti (traditional tunic and pants).
This dance is not just a celebration of culture but also a way to bring communities together, creating a sense of joy, unity, and spiritual connection. Today, Garba is celebrated not just in India but around the world, bringing a taste of Indian culture to global audience.
